Sega
rally was one of the first rallying games in the arcade that really caught my
attention. It didn’t try to play like
a simulator. I certainly didn’t have the
skill factor o a V-Rally and it never tried to do that. What you got was a straight out arcade
racing game and it was so much fun to play.
To
start of; you chose between two cars:
The Toyota Celica and the Corolla.
The Celica was the smaller of the two vehicles and had tight
handling. It was able to take corners
tighter. Where as the Corolla was heavier and could power slide better. I preferred the Corolla for it heavier
handling; it enabled me to drive faster around the corners and had a higher
top speed.
My
friend preferred the Celica and when we played the two player option, where
one player was above the other, there was some serious battles to win. This was always played in a good spirit. Sometimes he would win and other time I
would win.
In
the arcade mode, I found that the cars positions on the road never changed
and that was something I hoped would change in any follow up; it never did.
If
you wanted a challenge, you could increase the level but, all I really did
was reduce you time a move the cars further apart. It has it problems with glitching. What would happen was the background would suddenly appear but
after playing the game for a long while, I didn’t have time to notice
this. If you wanted to win the three
stages and the bonus forth stage, you had to be on the top of your game and
needed a little bit of luck to finish first after the bonus stage. It was hard but fair and I for one enjoy
every minute of play.
