Final Fantasy 8 or VIII

This was the second final fantasy game I played and after 7 it is a little bit of a let down.  It has a Starwars prequel feel about it compared to the original films.  Don’t get me wrong, it OK but that’s all it is.

Let me first introduce the characters:

This kids name is Squall and he is you typical teenager.  He is really thick but good at what he does.

I can’t remember the girls name and believe me I don’t want to.  She is nothing back a back stabbing turd that need to be flushed down the toilet as soon as possible.

This guy never makes it into military school and has decided to join the opposition forces to prove a point.  He thinks he’s important but is really a lackey.

So the story starts off with Squall and the dude above whose name escapes me.  The have a fight and you see where Squall gets his scare on his face.  You then appear back at training camp, where you get ready for a mission.  You are going as observers only but you some how get separated from the group and end up in a real fight.

You then get transported into a fight sequence where you fight a few soldiers and take turns attacking each other.  I noticed that in this game and pretty much every final fantasy game ever made, they use the same system to battle.

In this game you gave magic that attaches to you sword and enables you to do simple attacks at first but latter on in the game, can summon creatures.

You have a story where you eventually meet up with the bird.  She offers to assist you in finding some artefact and then promptly steels it from while you’re asleep.  The stupid Squall believes her story about not having a choice and takes her back.  Latter on in the game she does the same thing and he still takes her back.  It wouldn’t have to do with the fact that she’s needed later on in the game?

Man I would love to give Squall a slap; he’s an idiot.  If this girl or any other treated me like she did, I would have given her, her marching orders a long time ago but it’s a story and not a game and that’s the problem I have with these games.  All you do is move from a to b and have a load of pointless battles in between.  A friend of mine really likes these games but as for myself, I think I’ll give this particular series a miss.  I prefer Xenogears.  Yes it’s soppy buy, it has far more depth than this game and doesn’t feel like I’m being lead along a path.

If you like meaningless battles and stories that SUCK, then this is for you but if you like to feel more in charge look elsewhere.
