When I
owned a Sega Megadrive I purchased, this was one of the first games I
bought. It was a breath of fresh air.
It
was a typical horizontal shoot’em’up and never tried to do anything that
spectacular. What it offered was a
very good game and a really fun one too.
You played the lone fighter plane against a complete attack force. You had to make you way through a series of
levels and when this was released on the Megadrive, it was one of the closest
games to what a proper arcade would look like if it was released on the home
console. I was aware that the PC
Engine had games that were just as good but it never was released in Europe
and the cost of importing to too steep.
Well
this game used a different way of firing its weapons; for a start, you
started with about three different types of weapons that you could cycle
through. You picked up add-ons later
in the game and at the end of each level was quite a spectacular boss to
defeat. It required a lot of practice;
something that seemed to be a prerequisite.
If you made a slightest mistake; you’d lose you weapons and would be
put back with the basic weaponry and on the later level would be a real pain.
For
me the great experience in playing this game on the Megadrive was the fact
that I could either plug some headphones into it, or connect it to my stereo
and that really added depth to the game and all Sega Megadrive games. If you can play this game via the console
or emulation; I would recommend it whole-heartedly.
