Here’s a turn up for the books.
John Carmack decided that the next Quake game would be multi player
and this was in the days of dial-up.
I remember getting pings of 300 to 3000 and if you compare to today,
it seems almost laughable that we put up with this game.
This game improved massively from Quake 2 in the graphics
department. The trouble was; a lot of
people at that time were concerned whether or not a multi player only game
would sell. Well, it seem that Epic was
also releasing a version of Unreal in the guise of Unreal Tournament.
The story was so flimsy that I can’t remember it. Something about being taken from your
world and brought here just to fight.
I don’t think there was any ending to this game. That wasn’t the point of it.
The point of this game was to kick but and lots of it.
I must admit that I suck at these games; I just have difficulty
changing modes from being stealthy, as was needed in Quake 2 and unreal; to
then have to run around like a headless chicken. It just didn’t work for me.
I found that the only tactic that worked was to run around firing my
gun continuously until I either ran out of ammo or shoot someone. This worked quite well; I even got a three
kill shot with this method but to me that wasn’t gaming and didn’t require
skill.
There’s no denying that fact that this is a great game, I just
wished I didn’t suck so much playing the game.
Go buy it and have lots of fun. Personally, I prefer Unreal Tournament.
