Heretic
used the Doom engine but was based in a fantasy world. Unlike Doom I could not put this down
until I completed this game. For its
time the graphics were amazing.
Remember you could run this on a 486 PC and that was without a 3d
graphics card. How times have
changed. When I played this games, I
was using DOS 6.1 and had to mess around with base memory, extended memory
and another type of memory, its name escapes me at this moment.
There
wasn’t any story, or if there was it escaped me. You just walk through one level after another killing creatures
and find keys. It was such a simple
idea and worked really well.
If
you can find a program that runs the game in OpenGL or Direct x, I would
recommend it. It looks a lot better
for it and enables you to look around and jump. Man this game is ancient but well worth hunting around
for. The program also upgrades Doom,
Doom 2, Hexon and Hexon add-on files.
I
would think by now this game is Abandonware, it’s well over ten years since
its initial release.
