The
Gunman Chronicles used the Half Life engine and even though it was made in 1998,
to me the graphics looked great. The
story was engrossing and the game was generally well put together.
The
story as well as I can recollect, revolved around a general who ship was
devoured by a big plant, similar to a venus fly trap. You were there when this happened but
chose not to go back and find the general.
You then have to go on a search and destroy mission, where you meet
the general that you had thought to be
dead.
He
starts to tell you how he survived and that you now know too much. This is where the fun starts and you find
yourself fighting all sorts of creatures.
The first world has lots of
dinosaurs and remember that this was running on a Pentium 1 166MHZ with a 16
MB graphics card. The dinosaurs are
massive and wouldn’t look out of place on a FPS made today. The models were at the time ground
braking. The only reason this game
did not get more exposure was due to the fact that Half Life came out first
and was the first ground braking game to use a story really well.
The artificial
intelligence was better than fear. It
is true that some would say that the special effects are better in fear; you
have to remember that with fear; most of the game took place in corridors. I know, I completed it. In this game there is quite a lot of
action outside. This at the time
would have been stunning and even today is good enough to play and
enjoy.
Will
you enjoy this game? Most definitely;
I guarantee that as long as you ignore the graphics standard and don’t
compare with today, you’ll have the time of your life.
