2nd of February, 2011

It's 7:30 AM in the morning and I'm knackered.  I wish I could sleep at night.  I've noticed that youtube is now using HTML 5.0 now but my web editor doesn't like it anymore.

GameCentral has a review of Hamlet Or The Last Game Without MMORPG Features for the iPod/iPad but it's only £1.79.  More

Browser Game Pick: Black Market (Big Block Games)

You may have already given the alpha build of Black Market a play back when it was called Voyager. Since then, a hefty amount of content has been added to the game, so it's definitely worth checking out again.

Black Market is a space-based strategy game bursting with missions to undertake, enemies to blast and upgrades to buy. You play a bald guy with an eyepatch that talks to him - yeah, the story is a little silly, but the gameplay is enjoyable enough, and great for killing a couple of hours.

One for the strategists and explorers - there's even a hint of Weird Worlds in there. Go give it a play on the Big Block Games site.

Freeware Game Pick: Sprint - King of the Jungle (Lionsoft)

Sprint - King of the Jungle is a collect-'em-up that features single-screen challenges and twenty levels to play through, made by Darkleo of Lionsoft with the help of YoYo Games' Game Maker engine. The objective here is to collect fifty red gems before making your way to the exit, and if you complete this task before time runs out you'll be rewarded with an extra medal as well.

Besides the usual jump ability, Sprint the lion can also roar to make invisible platforms appear or scare off other animals blocking his way, although you'll have to gather three fruits first before the roar option is made available for you to use. Sprint - King of the Jungle is available to download from YoYo Games.

Trailer: Crossout (Coconut Island Studio)

One of the seven finalists for the 2010 Independent Games Festival China, Crossout is a single-button action game that involves drawing a loop around your enemies to kill them, which is sort of like Qix but with more freedom of movement.

Trapping enemies isn't your only mean of defeating them though. Collecting green power-up items may bestow you with blades and spears to use against your adversaries, or reward you the ability to charge through anything in your path, and a certain type of collectible even helps you by destroy everything on screen should you find yourself overwhelmed by the odds a little.

Crossout is being developed for the iOS devices, and should be released sometime next year.

Trailer: Death Worm (PlayCreek)

There's been a ton of Death Worm wannabes for the PC, browsers, and even iPhones, but none of them come close to offering the same destructive gameplay that JTR's Game Maker creation had perfected so many years ago. Soon you can take the game with you on the road and play it anytime you want, thanks to an upcoming iOS version of Death Worm that is set to be released on the App Store in just a matter of days now.

Not content with just cranking up the details and content by several notches, Death Worm iOS will also feature online scoreboards, achievements, power-ups, nitro jumps, and brand new types of enemies for your worm to gobble up as food. Look for it to appear in the App Store very soon.

Nimbus (Noumenon Games) trailer

Nimbus is a puzzle racer with over 50 levels to play through and many tight spaces to navigate. Your craft has no means of propelling itself, hence it must use the surrounding level to gain boosts and reach the goal. It's one of those 'easy to get into, hard to master' setups, with stupidly difficult levels by the time you reach the end.

I've been playing it all morning, and can testify that the $9.99/£5.99 price tag is well worth it - it's all very lovely stuff. There doesn't appear to be a demo at the moment, but if you want to go for it anyway, grab a copy from Steam.

Browser Game Pick: Action Escape Kitty (Melly)

Action Escape Kitty is a tough side-scrolling shmup. There is no end to the game - rather, you keep on blasting and surviving for as long as possible.

C shoots, and X deploys a special blast that turns all the bullets on screen into score. From what I can tell, the different formations of enemies appear in a random order, so no two games are the same. Not that I can last very long, anyway - even with five lives, I can't do much more than a minute!

See if you can do better over at MochiGames.

Golden Sun: Dark Dawn trailer

Freeware Game Pick: Cloud 9 (Rockin' Moses)

Cloud 9 is a gorgeous F-Zero like racer with futuristic vehicles and ballistic speeds. It's still early in development and has one track right now, but it's still worth taking for a spin just for the visuals.

There's a cel-shaded theme going on with both the racers and the environment, and it all looks very pretty indeed. Racing involves balancing boost against health, as both use the same energy bar. Health can be regenerated by racing through the clouds and collecting water. Up to four players can race on the same PC, or a single player can take on the tricky AI.

If you've got a wired Xbox 360 controller, I'd advise using it here - it definitely makes the game more enjoyable. Download from the Cloud 9 site.

Swimming Under Clouds (Piece of Pie Studios)

With artwork from Mikaël 'Orioto' Aguirre, Swimming Under Clouds is a platformer with a twist - you play a fish in a bubble of water, and must use physics-based gameplay to progress.

The fish can move the water around and jump onto platforms and over spikes, but he'll usually need a bit of a run-up and a handily positioned ramp. The water is a little fragile, however - mistime a jump and some of the water may run off the platform and be lost. Lose too much water and the fish won't have enough to stay alive. It's a lovely idea and works very well indeed, with great fluid mechanics on display.

Water can also be sacrificed to progress, too. Switches need to be thrown by firing some of your water at them, while shooting water can also be used as a means of propelling your fish across particularly wide chasms. On top of this, the level design really challenges you to use all your available abilities, with multiple paths to victory - the higher the path, the more difficult it is to navigate.

Of course, it's all rather gorgeous too. There's still a good half a year until the game will be released, but from what I've seen so far, Swimming Under Clouds is definitely going to be worth a play. Check out the Piece of Pie Studios site for more details.

Conquest: Divide and Conquer Released

Conquest: Divide and Conquer is an online multiplayer turn-based strategy game that was just released for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Rather than supplying long, drawn-out battles against friends, Conquest aims to provide short bursts of strategy action, with randomly generated maps and plenty of destruction. The game costs $15 to buy from the official site, but there is a rather meaty demo available that allows you to play online multiplayer matches against friends and get a feel for the game.

I'm not a huge strategy game player (that is to say, I'm crap at them) so I need you guys to download the demo and tell me if it's good or not i.e. do my job for me. It looks extremely polished either way.

Just when I thought I had seen everything, this device comes along.  It's a Wii remote with special attachments.   I wonder how long this device will be allowed to be sold before Nintendo send their "cease and desist" notice.  More

Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories trailer

Trailer: Fez (Polytron)

Seems like that time of the year when past IGF winners come out of their caves and basements to show us what they've been working on. Here's a new gameplay trailer for Polytron Corporation's Fez, which (according to their earlier announcement) is due out on XBLA sometime in 2010.

Indie Games Arcade: Tiny and Big (Black Pants)

Tiny and Big is a cel-shaded cartoony platformer that feels very much like slash-em-up Plain Sight to control, but has some very interesting game mechanics that make it something pretty special. You control Tiny on his quest to get his underpants back from Big, a mischievous little fellow who is constantly on the run from you.

Tiny has a few tricks up his sleeve. First, left-clicking on an object will attach a cable to it, which can then be pulled to drag stuff around or topple pillars. This is enjoyable enough, but the real fun comes with the right mouse button - holding the button down, then dragging across a surface and letting go will cause Tiny to cut through the surface with a laser beam, potentially cutting said object into bits.

This mechanic coupled with your cable trick can be used to create new platforms and clear paths onwards. For those blocks that are being a bit too stubborn, you've also got rockets on your middle mouse button - the first click places a rocket on an object, and then holding down the middle button causes the rocket to blast off and take the debris with it. It's all very clever stuff and works really well. The demo on display was pretty short, but I'm definitely interested to see more concepts around this idea.

The demo is now in fact available for download, and you can grab it from the Tiny and Big site. Grab a copy and see what you think. There's no release date set for the game yet.
