This
came out about eight years ago and changed the way RPGs as we know them were
played. It was the first game to
marry FMV with the game and get it to work.
There were many attempts before but they were nothing more than movies
with the odd move for the player to make.
This one was and is an epic that will take the average
player quite a while to complete.
The story. You are
a member of a terrorist group who want to topple the government in charge of
the Shinra organisation and the city that it runs. You play a character called cloud and start outside a materia
reactor. As you run into the reactor
the first of many battles ensue.

As the story unfolds, you will learn about the characters
past and how you became a member of shinra’s special forces, called
soldier. Why you left and quite a few
other bits of info that would take to long to cover in this simple review of
the game.

These are a few of the first scenes from the FMV and in
them, you see this flower girl. She walks
along the road and then the camera pans out to show you the city. The next thing you see is the train that
is taking you to the reactor. Nothing
is mentioned about the flower girl for a while but, it is this kind of
intrigue that keeps you coming back for more. There are many characters in the game that you meet or see but
you won’t find out about straight away.
As the story unfolds you find that they are linked in some way. I’ll leave that for you to find out.
In my opinion this is still the defining Final Fantasy
game. It has funny moments, sad
moments, bad moments and moments of heroism.
This is the total package of how a RPG should be made. The music is brilliant. There is a band going around different
countries playing the tracks with a full orchestra. It came on 3 CDs, which at the time was huge. It showed what could be done on the
Playstation when put into the hands of an artist.
I would call this a movie rather than a game. You can go to a lot of different places
but, there are some sections where you may feel like a character in a play,
rather than a player in a game but, it is needed to build the story and when
the story starts, you won’t care. A
friend spent 72 Hours playing this game straight without a break. I think he’s nuts but he just really likes
this game. In total he spent well
over two hundred hours playing the game.
Overall. If you
like RPGs. You’ll love this.
