I purchased this device for one reason and that was that it had a better looking d-pad than the GP2x. This is one of these Chinese MP4 player devices that plays emulation as well.
It has a 500 MHZ CPU that can be over clock to 600 MHZ, as I understand it. It is able to be used as a voice recorder and plays movies.
The emulators are as follows: NES: It runs the games well and with sound. The emulator seemed to be quite solid in its ability to play the ROMs and was quite good. I tried to take some photos but my digital camera is crap and the pictures would not do this device justice. It has an amazing screen. The definition is unbelievable. SNES: This is usually the problem child of the family and I wasn't expecting much from this emulator but, I was proven to be wrong. The only trouble with this emulator was, the speed needs some form of control. For example; when the game didn't have much going on the screen, the speed would go through the roof. It would suddenly play very fast and at times would slow down. I think is needs some kind of frame skip controlling program but it still is ok apart from that. Gameboy and Gameboy Color: There isn't any sound in this emulator and the games run too fast. I think when they implement sound, this emulator will be great. You can't save in the game and have to rely on the machines save function. Sega Megadrive / Genesis: Unusually; this emulator was very slow. If you turn on the sound, It got even worse. (working progress) Neo Geo: This emulator had sound and played almost all the ROMs full speed and didn't slow down that much. The only problem is that you need to find ROMs with .NEO extension. I found them on a Chinese website that sells a similar product. The name of the company is Ainol and you need to download them from their FTP site. FTP IP: www.ainol.com Account: ainolfans Password: wwwainolcom The site is a little bit slow but persevere and you will not be disappointed. Gameboy Advanced: Don't bother; this emulator is so bad that it defies logic. Maybe in a years time it might work and will require a lot of tweaking; it might run at a sensible speed. At the moment the games are almost a slide shows. Movies: I haven't tried many different formats. I used a program to convert AVI files to a version with a resolution of 320 x 240, which is the native resolution of the screen and it worked great. I loaded up a 4 GB SD Card with movies and was pleasantly surprised to find that the picture was great and with no slow down what so ever. It is based on Linux and should enable the homebrew scene to make their own programs. At the moment the device is too new to tell whether or not it will be taken to heart by the homebrew scene. Overall I would say that this product is OK. If they can iron out the flaws in this hand held, it will be brilliant. The only down side is the battery. I found that it lasted a couple of hours in use and could really do with a more power battery. It is only 1000Ma and it would have faired better with a could of AAA batteries, rather than a battery which will be near on impossible to find in years to come. |
