Classic Doom on the PC

I was on the Artificial Intelligents podcast recently and I brought up the fact that Doom on the XBOX 360 looked like crap and one of the presenters said that there wasn't a lot that Microsoft could do with that old game.  It got me thinking and I decided to see if there were any better versions of this game and I came up with this short list of upgraded games on the PC

Doom Legacy

The first version uses the original doom files and upscales the graphics.  You have a choice of running Doom in OpenGL or Directx.  You can run the game in any resolution and it runs on pretty much anything.

The engine was used for Doom 2, Heretic and Hexen;  This engine will work with any of these games.  Unlike the original games; you can now run, duck and jump.  You can now aim your gun and it does look considerably better than it did over fifteen years ago.

As you can see if you click on the images and look at the larger versions; this game doesn't look to bad.

The software required to get this version running can be found here.

Here is a direct link to the file.  Download Doom Legacy v1.42

If you need the wad file to play doom or any of the engine based games, I have posted the original wad files need to play doom in high resolution.  (If there is a problem with any of these files, please email me and I will remove them.)

To install the games, you must first download the wad files and put them somewhere you will remember and the the next thing is to download Doom Legacy.  Run the program and follow the instructions.  It will ask you which games you have and ask you to find the Wad files.  Once this is done, all you have to do is set the resolution you want the games to run in and set the keys.

Final Doom Plutonia and TNT wads.

Ulitmate doom.

Doom 2.

Heretic.

Hexen.

Classic Doom 3

The Classic Doom 3 modification is a remake of the original Doom game, by id Software. The main emphasis is that of bringing the older game up to date in a modern graphics engine. The project makes use of all of Doom 3's advanced
graphical features while retaining the feel and gameplay of the original game.

The project will only cover the shareware levels due to many reasons that include the following :

- We are bored of converting over peoples stuff and want to create something of our own.
- The mod started off as a fun way to learn how to mod for Doom 3, and we all feel we have learnt what we need to make our own project.
- A more minor reason is the legalities of remaking anything past the freely available shareware episode.

Our latest build is version 1.3.1 which is the final version that we plan to release. This version is numbered 1.3.1 to reflect the fact that it has been tested to work with Doom 3 patch release 1.3.1, and thus works both with Doom 3 on steam and windows vista.

This is the 1.1 version of Classic Doom 3 for Doom 3. This version contains the full episode of "Knee Deep In The Dead" in both single player and multiplayer styles. This is the final release from the Classic Doom 3 team, but proves to be a great one with a HUGE list of bug fixes and changes (found below in the readme).

You can down load the complete doom 3 mod to play doom classic here.

to install the game you need to:

1: install doom 3

2: install patch 1.3.1

3: install doom classic.

the go into the doom3/cdoom and make a short cut to cdoom.bat to the desktop and run the file.
