Toshiba WTL66 42”

I recently took order of a Toshiba WTL66 42” LCD TV and I thought you would be interested in what I thought of it.

Unlike some reviews that state that this TV is 1080p; the truth is that it is 1080i.  It has a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 and when you have anything that can run 720p or 1080i, you will see the improvements straight away.

I first tested SKY satellite and it was ok.  I noticed that the TV uses some kind of technology that tries to refine the display.  For example.  I was using my PC via S-video and the screen would clear up as soon as nothing was moving.  This is very useful if you do not have a VGA or HDMI cable.  Considering that I was only using RGB Scart and the same could be said for, my Dreamcast, Gamecube, PSX, PS2, XBOX and my DVD players.  I do want to get some component cables.

I purchased a 6 in 1 component switch box.  This way I will be able to upgrade some of the cables to component.

The XBOX 360 looks gorgeous as I would expect but I did have to change my pc to 1280 x 720 to get a decent picture through the HDMI port.  I haven’t really bothered with DVDs so much as I prefer to use my projector and that is limited to 98”, which is still a lot better than this TV.  The only down side is that the projector doesn’t have DVI, HDMI or any other digital input.

The setup was sort of easy.  When you turn on the TV for the first time, the freeview box that is integrated into the TV auto installs but I have to check the manual to setup the analogue tuner.  Why would I wont to do this you may ask?  To setup my VCR, that’s why.

There are enough inputs on the TV for your average person. There are two Scarts, 2 HDMIs, 1 Component, 1 VGA, 1 Composite and the obligatory RF cable. There is space for 2 cams; whatever that is and there is a Composite and stereo out to connect to another TV or Amp in my case.

I was going to buy a Nintendo Revolution but after hearing all the stories of idiots throwing the unit into the TV, I decided not to bother.  The trouble is I know a few friends and it is possible, even if unlikely that they might get so excited as to throw the remote into my TV and as I have only bought the thing, I would have to kill them.

Overall the TV is very good and at a reasonable price.  The only real gripe is the remote is a bit sluggish and their probably will be a lot of tweaking to get everything exactly the way I want it.  Overall it’s very good.
