The truth of the matter

Name:  The truth of the matter

Author: Michael James Allen

Characters:

Jeffrey Baits:  Jeffrey is around sixty years old; he works at a distinguished University in Cambridge; he teaches history and has also taught linguistics in the past.  He started teaching around the age of forty, which is quite old for a teacher.  Jeff is well spoken and being a teacher, understandably has an excellent grasp of English.  He usually wears a suit, as he has an image to uphold at of the university.

Alberto Courta:  Alberto is sixty five years old.  He was born in Milan, Italy; has three daughters and works in his farm which grows grapes.  He has a limited view of the world, due to the fact that he spent most of his life on the farm.

Thug a:  Is just there to carry away the body

Thug b:  assists thug a

Scenario:  Five years ago, Alberto’s daughter Maria went to Cambridge University to study economics but disappeared.  No one Alberto spoke to could explain where she may have disappeared to; so he decided to come to Cambridge and find out if anyone might be able to help him at the university she was attending.

The set:  The scene is held in Jeff’s office at the university and there will be a table and a couple of chairs around it.

Jeffrey is looking through some notes at his desk when a knock on the door gets his attention.  He gets up and walks towards the door and opens it.

Jeffrey:          Hello!  Who are you?

Alberto:         My name is Alberto Courta and I wish to speak to you about my daughter Maria Courta.

Jeffrey:          I see!  What do you want to know?

Alberto:         Do know where she might be?

Jeffrey walks over to his table

Jeffrey:          Would you like a cup of tea while I look through my records regarding the disappearance of your daughter?

Alberto:         I guess a cup of tea won’t harm me

Alberto walks over to Jeffrey’s table; picks up the cup of tea and walks towards one of the chairs.  Jeffrey sits down behind the table

Jeffrey:          It is a shame that your daughter is missing

Alberto:         When did she disappear?

Alberto sips the tea

Jeffrey:          About eight months ago

Alberto:         Have the police found any leads?

Alberto sips the tea

Jeffrey:          None that I’m aware of; but then again, I’m a history teacher, not a policeman.

Alberto:         I thought you might have some idea what might have happened to her.

Jeffrey:          Why do you say that?

Alberto:         Maria always said that you looked after her when she was here.  She said that you were going to introduce her to the Club of Rome.

Jeffery’s eye brow lifts up slightly

Jeffrey:          Club of Rome?  What are you talking about?

Alberto:         You didn’t introduce her to the Club of Rome?

Jeffrey:          My good fellow, there are many clubs in this university but I have never heard of a Club of Rome.

Alberto:         Then if that’s the case, what club could my daughter have been talking about?

Jeffrey:          Maybe this club

Jeffery picks up a golf club from behind the desk and hits Alberto in the head.  Alberto falls over and Jeffrey hits Alberto again

Alberto:         Why did you hit me with that club?

Jeffrey:          I guess I can tell a dead man

Alberto:         What do you mean, a dead man?

Alberto starts to feel funny and grabs his stomach

Alberto:         What have you done to me?

Jeffrey:          The cup of tea I gave you was poisoned

Alberto:         But why would you want to poison me, I only came to find my daughter.

Jeffrey:          Precisely!  You know too much already!  I was warned that you would come to find me.

Alberto:         By who and why?

Jeffrey:          If I told you, I would have to kill you!

Jeffrey starts to laugh

Jeffrey:          But I’ve already killed you, so I guess It won’t matter anyway.

Alberto:         (Cough)

Jeffrey:          You see this establishment is sponsored by some very powerful people around the world.

Alberto:         Like who?  The government?

Jeffery stars to laugh

Jeffrey:          (shouts) The government?  You must be joking?  The government answer to the same people as this university.

Alberto:         Are you talking about the mafia?

Jeffrey:          The mafia are subordinates as well.  I’m talking about an organisation that controls every aspect of human life.

Alberto:         How would a university fit into something like that?

Jeffrey:          You really don’t know?  Who do you think crafts your children’s understanding of the world?

Jeffrey:          You?

Alberto:         I did what I could.

Jeffrey:          What do you do for a living?

Alberto:         I am a framer.

Jeffrey:          How many hours a day did you actually teach Maria?

Pause

Alberto:         A couple of hours a day.

Jeffrey:          The schooling system has your children for over six hours a day!  Imagine the depths of influence we have on how they think, how they dress, what they say and whether or not they’re accepted my their pears.

Alberto:         I don’t understand!

Jeffrey:          I never expected someone of your intellect to comprehend how effective an established centre for learning could actually brainwash your children.

Alberto:         Brainwash?  How and why?

Jeffrey:          When you are building a perfect society, you need to find the best brains and to be able to completely control them.  We allow them to experiment with drugs and they’re encouraged have as many partners as they like here.

Alberto:         But how would that make someone brainwashed?

Jeffrey:          After they have acquired a habit of some sort, we then introduce them to the highest echelons of the university.  Those who join, willing stay; because they think that they will gain power.

Alberto:         What happens to those who refuse to join?

Jeffrey:          The few who choose not to join are dealt with.

Alberto:         Dealt with?  How?

Jeffery smiles and bends over to the now sitting Alberto

Jeffrey:          We kill them obviously!

Alberto:         You killed my daughter?

Jeffrey:          Have you ever heard of the word Omertà?

Alberto:         Of course I’ve heard of that!  Omertà is the mafia code of silence.

Jeffrey:          Well, Maria obviously didn’t and she started to speak about matters that were meant to be kept secret.

Pause

Jeffrey:          It was a test and she failed!  So she had to be dealt with!

Alberto:         You bastard!  You’ve killed my daughter!

Jeffrey:          Don’t worry, you will soon be joining her yourself!

Alberto:         What did my daughter do that deserved death?

Jeffrey:          There are two types of people in the world; the elite and the cattle and we are cattle.

Alberto:         What do you mean by cattle?

Jeffrey:          We are nothing more than play things to the elite.  They use us and dispose of us once we are no longer useful.

Alberto:         What was Maria used for?

Jeffrey:          Do you really want to know?

Alberto:         This in not something that you will enjoy hearing; do you really want to know the truth about your daughter?

Alberto:         I am going to die anyway, what difference will it make?

Jeffrey:          True!

Jeffrey:          You daughter was picked by the inner circle for her blood type, which they found to be compatible for their needs.

Alberto:         Blood type? Needs?

Jeffrey:          If you shut up and let me speak, I will explain the reason!

Jeffrey:          People of power are predetermined before they are born.  Your daughter was one of those people that the elite knew would influence the world; so she was programmed.

Alberto:         Programmed?  What do you mean programmed?

Jeffrey:          It has been known for a long time that individuals can be controlled easily if they experience trauma and she experienced quite a lot of torture!

Alberto:         I’m afraid to ask, but what type of torture would be speaking of?

Jeffery casually says as if it was a regular event

Jeffrey:          Oh the usual; gang rape, beatings, and she would also have to watch the other members be rapped and tortured as well.

Alberto:         You are a sick man!  I hope you burn in hell!

Jeffrey:          After Maria started to speak about the events to other students at the university, she had to be silenced.

Alberto:         How would this group of people have known that she spoke about them?

Jeffrey:          Because she spoke to one of the members of our group she wasn’t familiar with, that’s how!

Alberto:         How was she killed?  I must know!

Jeffrey:          Maria was a very pretty young lady and there were many men and women who wanted to have sex with her; so they raped her to death!

Jeffery starts to laugh insanely

A tear starts to form on Alberto’s eye

Alberto:         Why?  Why did you have to have here killed?

Jeffrey:          We had an orgy at one of our secret meetings and she wouldn’t have sex with the principle of the university.

Alberto:         What’s wrong with that?

Jeffrey:          In am organisation like ours, all subordinates have to do what they’re told, always!

Alberto:         She was killed because of that?

Jeffrey:          She was killed because she couldn’t keep her mouth shut!

Jeffrey picks up his mobile phone and speaks to someone

Jeffrey:          Hello?  I have a code 1!

Jeffery puts his mobile back into his pocket.  A moment later, two men come into his office.

Thug a:          Is this the code 1?

Jeffrey:          That’s right but don’t make too much noise.

Thug b:          Don’t you worry about that.

Thug b pulls out a gun with a silencer and shoots Alberto twice.  As Alberto starts to fade away, Jeffery bends over near to his ear

Jeffrey:          She could have had anything she wanted; but she turned me down.  Say hello to her when you meet her!

The two thugs carry Alberto out of the room

The curtains drop
