Is HDTV all it's cracked up to be?

I purchased A 42 inch Toshiba REGZA LCD TV with a native resolution of 1920 x 1080.  It isn’t 1080p but I think it may only provide that via the HDMI port.

The only problem I have is that the high resolutions aren’t that impressive.  I do not think it’s only this TV.  For example; on the PC; you can run games in very high resolutions but I found that once I increased the resolution above 800 x 600, that the increase in picture quality was minimal at best.  I have been able to compare the PC monitor and the TV via HDMI and the quality of the TV is on par.  The trouble isn’t with the hardware but the software.

I have read in many places how gorgeous Gears of War looks.  Perhaps these people never played a PC.  Gears of War looks like Unreal Tournament 2003 with a little bit more detail on the faces; that’s it; no increase in detail on the walls.  In fact I would go as far as to say that F.E.A.R. is in fact a better technical game regarding the graphics.

In my opinion, the problem with selling technology on the back of software is that at the moment, the movie and games industry don’t really know what to do with the hardware.  An example:

The XB0X 360 is a very good machine but the trouble is that as a gamer for over twenty five years, I have seen pretty much everything that has been released on the machine a dozen times before.  The names have been changed to protect the innocent, if you know what I mean.  I find that certain types of games automatically suit the PC keyboard and mouse setup.

That leaves driving games that have better graphics and there is only so many graphic improvements that can be made before I think to myself, why am I even considering buying Project Gotham 3 when I already own the first game and I didn’t like the way that handled.

One day there will be enough reasons to own a High Definition Television but as things stand, Even though I can’t use 1080p on my projector and the fact that I don’t play that many games on consoles as I used to.  I think I would suggest holding off purchasing HDTV.  It doesn’t offer enough to justify the cost.  I would suggest you buy a standard TV and a PC.  You can still get a very good response from it.  The average standard TV can display up to 1024 x 768 and The types of games you will play on the TV look great.  Because it is forgiving even emulation look great, even better than on a monitor.
