6th of May 2010

I must be popular these days; someone hacked half of my site and injected links to malicious websites.  It has taken me two days to delete the site and then re-upload the near three gigs of data and then get my web host provider to remove anything else.  I am grateful the them for their help.

For one week, Siliconera has a special on Deus Ex: Human Revolution.  What will this game turn out like is anyone's guess at the moment.  I personally hope that they return back to the original game rather than the gimped sequel.  More

Freeware Game Pick: Challenge from Kiyoshi (8bits fanatics)

Challenge from Kiyoshi is a 2D platformer that was designed to be extremely unforgiving, with plenty of instant-kill traps more likely to cause frustration than a feeling of amusement. Some puzzles require the player to think out of the box, and there are even a couple of invisible platforms that can only be found by trial and error.

Pressing the X key causes your character to jump, and you can leap even higher if you press the same button while squatting down. Tap the D key to throw a couple of punches and kicks, or use the Tab key to kill yourself and return to the checkpoint at the start of the stage. The space key can be used to pause the game at any time, while pressing the F4 function key switches between full screen and windowed mode.

Challenge from Kiyoshi is a game that will not appeal to casual players, but it does provide the sort of entertainment that fans of difficult platformers will definitely appreciate. Get the English version here. (Windows, 8.44MB)

Freeware Game Pick: His Dark Majesty (Jakub Debski)

His Dark Majesty is a turn-based strategy game for 8-bit Atari computers, where players get to command troops in battle by issuing orders to units one at a time. The first few stages do an adequate job of teaching players about individual unit specialties and battle strategies, but to learn what each icon and status symbol stands for you will have to visit the FAQ section on the official site.

The one-button control works fairly well for issuing commands to your troops, and you can cancel orders by holding the assigned action key for a few seconds while the selection box is over a friendly unit. Carrying out the same action on an unoccupied tile ends your turn, and you can even examine an enemy unit's movement and attack range by selecting them.

Fans of strategy games who don't mind booting up the emulator will enjoy His Dark Majesty quite a bit, although large skirmishes and battles could take over an hour to play when both sides have plenty of units to order around.

The Humble Indie Bundle

Is this the greatest indie gaming bundle ever? The Humble Indie Bundle contains five big indie releases, DRM-free, choose how much you pay for them, part of your payment goes to charity... yep, sounds like the real deal to me.

The five games in question are World of Goo, Aquaria, Gish, Lugaru HD and Penumbra Overture. Altogether they cost a total of $80, but for the next 7 days they can be yours for any price you like. Part of your donation also goes to the Child's Play and Electronic Frontier Foundation charities.

The nicest thing about this bundle is that you can customize how your payment is split between the developers and charities. If you'd rather it all went to charity, you can select that. If you love World of Goo so much that you feel it all deserves to go to 2D Boy, that's possible.

If you don't own all five of these games, you need to grab this bundle sometime in the next week. In fact, go and grab it right now.

Trailer: The Dark Void (DigiPen)

This is a presentation trailer for a DigiPen second semester freshman game, created by a team of four students. The Dark Void is an Advance Wars-style tactical turn-based strategy game that features diverse gameplay elements, challenging AI and realistic explosions.

The restriction for the project was that it had to be an ASCII-based game coded with C. Charlie Ngo (alias Kairos, creator of Varia) is one of the members on the team, so you know the game is just going to be awesome. The Dark Void was also one of the five freshman games selected for presentation at the DigiPen Student Showcase.

The Independint Charles Show: Episode 1

You wouldn't believe that this was an official Microsoft video series if it weren't for the logo at the start. Kudos to MS for picking up Scottish comedy writer Robert Florence for what turns out to be hilarious, and kudos for giving Xbox Live Indie Games a bit of much needed publicity, even if it is only 2 games!

Freeware Game Pick: Eternally Us (Ben Chandler and Steven Poulton)

Eternally Us is a short 2D adventure game that tells the story of Fio and Amber, two friends who have known each other since childhood. An incident occurs that separates the both of them while they were feeding birds in a park, so it is up to the player to help reunite the best buddies together again.

None of the puzzles should trouble you too much, since any inventory item acquired will be used in the same room that it was found at. Download the game here. (Windows, 43.4MB)

A version of Mechwarrior 4 is available to download for free.  More
