8th of June 2010

Marvelous Entertainment has announced that production on a new IP will cease.  I find it disconcerting that a company with a good pedigree is close to bankruptcy and isn't prepared to take the risk of loosing money on a new IP.  Who will make the next great rpg?  More

Having seen images for Disgaea Infinite, I wanted to know what this game is and what relationship does it have to the Disgaea franchise.  Luckily, Siliconera has a question and answer section that answers those questions and many more.  More

Idea Factory is working on a wife simulator called My Wife: A Bride Just For You and it begins with the player creating his ideal wife.  Maybe I have missed something here but I don't think that's how it works in the real world.  More

Trailer: Crossfire (Radiangames)

Crossfire is the second in a series of Xbox Live Indie Games arena shooters from Radiangames - the first being JoyJoy which was released recently and became a top 6 finalist in the Dream.Build.Play competition.

The trick behind Crossfire is the ability to warp from the top of the screen to the bottom, and vice versa, making for some extremely hectic blasting. Just watching the above trailer makes me think there is no way my brain will be able to deal with that many lazers, no matter how simple the idea is. But, you know, in a totally 'I keep dying but this is still awesome' sort of way.

Coming later this month to XBLIG.

Freeware Game Pick: Searchlight (Alpha Secret Base)

After more than a year since their last game (Kaiten Patissier), Alpha Secret Base has released Searchlight, new platform/puzzle game in which you play as a sort of modern day Robin Hood freeing the world's treasures from the powers that be. The titular searchlights are an instant fail if you get caught by them, and they add a nice sense of frenzy to what could otherwise be a much slower puzzle game.

The level design is quite good, with several of the more difficult levels having a non-obvious but significantly easier path if you think about the switch and platform layouts for a few minutes.

Preview: Scoregasm (Charlie's Games)

Charlie has released a huge nine minute long gameplay preview of his upcoming arena shooter Scoregasm, and it's looking pretty fantastic. Graphically, the setting reminds me a little of Sidhe's IGF finalist Shatter, which is definitely not a bad thing.

On each of Scoregasm's 50+ levels, there are three possible exits with different exits appearing appearing depending on how well you score. The game includes phrases such as 'Super Frenzy' and 'Death Sphere', both of which excite me greatly.

My advice is to watch the entire nine minutes - there's so much variety in enemy and boss battles and it's frantically action-packed throughout. The game is due for release sometime very soon, and pre-orders are currently being taken - $10 will get you the full game on release, while $15 will allow you access to the beta immediately.

For more info, visit Charlie's Games

Freeware Game Pick: Hydorah (Locomalito)

Hydorah is a Gradius-style horizontal shooter that features sixteen different levels to beat, a wide variety of weapons to unlock, and a handful of secrets that can only be found by space pilots who dare travel off the beaten path. There is a progress save option that'll come in handy for practicing and mastering difficult stages, although players aren't allowed to use it more than three times during the entire mission.

Both primary and secondary weapons are mapped to the same key, while the ship's loadout is decided by the player before the start of each stage. Upgrades carry over from the last level, but lose a ship and your weapons will be weakened considerably.

Locomalito has made many improvements to Hydorah after receiving feedback from the demo released last year. The lack of a difficulty setting is going to irk some players, but shmup fans who had been yearning for a decent 2D side-scrolling shooter will be more than delighted with this gem of a game. (Windows, 82.0MB)

A fan remake of Zelda 2 can be played on the net.  It turns the side scrolling 2D way into a FPS.  You need to install a program called Unity but then you're good to go.  More

Aquaria, Penumbra, Lugaru and Gish Now Open-Source

After the Humble Indie Bundle topped the incredible heights of $1million total sales, the developers involved announced they'd be releasing the source for their games (after a quick code clean-up, of course!). Wolfire's Lugaru went first, followed by Penumbra: Overture and Gish's source was burst open a few days ago.

Now Aquaria has followed suit, rounding it all off. Alec Holowka, part of the Bit Blot team behind Aquaria, has given his thoughts on the release over on the Infinite Ammo site:
"Releasing code is hard for me. It’s always imperfect (or in my case, mostly a mess) and it feels extremely personal. Especially with Aquaria – a game that involved a lot of stress and heartbreak over the course of its development. (a significant portion of the code was written while under the influence of Canadian Club Whisky)"

Check it out, it's worth a read. And if you are so inclined, make sure to download the source too!

Night Train‏ (Xportmedia)

Night Train is the story of a woman's journey into her memories. Having fallen asleep while riding the train, she begins to remember her past, and slowly pieces together why she is on the train in the first place.

The game follows her train of thought from her earliest memory to the present day. Night Train is to be just one part of a series of stories called The Things That Haunt Us, and is due to be released sometime in July. It's got something very Tale of Tales behind it all... or at least I think so.

A demo will be available for download from June 11th. The trailer is after the cut.

Freeware Game Pick: The Life of a Pacifist (Bento Smile)

The Life Of A Pacifist Is Often Fraught With Conflict is a cartoony visual novel created by Bento Smile using the Ren'py engine, featuring five different endings and a quick conversation skip button that can be extremely useful for multiple playthroughs. In it you play as a member of a game development team, attending another meeting to discuss the agenda for the day with your fellow colleagues.

The game is displayed in full screen by default, but you can switch to windowed mode by pressing the F key. A discussion thread for it can be found here. (Mac/Win/Linux, 3.92MB)
