Here are the specs for Mirror's Edge on the PC

As far as PhysX is concerned - The game will run fine without it.

Operating System Microsoft Windows XP SP2/Vista
Processor Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz or 100% compatible equivalent
Memory 1GB RAM
Video Card 256MB memory with Shader Model 3.0*
HDD Space 8GB
DVD Drive 1x DVD Drive
Soundcard Soundcard with DirectX 9.0c compatibility
DirectX DirectX 9.0c
Network: An online connection is required for access to Leaderboards

That's the min-specc machine and that will have physX turned off. While the physX stuff looks amazing and we're greatful to the help we've had from Nvidia to implement it, we always knew we couldn't make it a "must-have" just yet in a game, as not everyone has it. So you will have the same core experience without it. (Source)

What we know about Joakim's new game (pictured above):

- it is called "Solar Plexus"
- not about punching people in the stomach
- a 2D platformer with puzzle elements involving blocks
- uses the mouse as one of the control inputs
- small stages
- has a world map
- the main character is a woman in a suit
- 640x480 resolution (Noitu Love 2 is 320x240)
- most of the graphics in the game are drawn by hand
- expect awesome boss fights

Freeware Game Pick: Insomnia (Wilson Saunders)

A 2D platformer created by Wilson Saunders, the objective of Insomnia is to reach the top of a tower before you collapse from deprivation of sleep and get dragged down by tentacles into their cold embrace for a really long nap.

Use the cursor keys to move, press the Z or space key to jump, and hold the up arrow key to hook on to the surface of a wall or a ledge. You can also restart a game quickly by pressing the enter key.

As time passes, our energetic protagonist will begin to feel sleepy. Negative effects from drowsiness include impaired view, reduced jump height and decreased mobility. Grab items which increase awareness to counter these illl effects, but try to avoid using syringes or pills unless absolutely necessary as taking medication causes the tentacles to reach higher.

A short congratulatory screen is shown if you manage to reach the top of the tower. (forum thread)

Freeware Game Pick: Teppomanto (Ikiki)

Untitled from cave on Vimeo.

Teppomanto is a new 2D action game created by the author of Nikujin and Teppoman, where players assume control over another naked assassin on a mission to infiltrate the enemy base and take out all adversaries within.

Use the cursor keys to move, press the left control key to attack or shoot, and hold the left shift key to jump. Tap the left or right arrow key twice to make your character run in either direction. If you dash near the edge of a platform and hold the shift key when in midair, the trained killer will extend his cape and attempt to glide slowly back to the ground. Press the down arrow key to open treasure chests or swap weapons.

Strangely enough, but not for the first time, the J key can also be used to commit suicide. You will also need to execute intricate wall jumps and reverse jumps to reach certain areas in the game. (unzip instructions)

Freeware Game Pick: Lost in Eldritch (Joachim Despland)

Lost in Eldritch is a short 2D platformer created by Joachim Despland for TIGSource's Commonplace Book competition, featuring a protagonist who is stranded on an unfamiliar landscape with no memory of events leading up to his current predicament.

Use the cursor keys to move, press the Z key to jump, and hold the A key to walk slowly. The adventure itself is a short one, although most players would find the control scheme awkward and quit in frustration before reaching the end.

Freeware Game Pick: From Primordial Egg (Logan Ames)

From Primordial Egg is a Commonplace Book competition entry created by Logan Ames, developer of the exploration platformer Nothing. Starting out as a baby dinosaur inside an egg, players would have to press a button repeatedly to break the shell and venture forth into the labyrinth for food.

Use the Z key to bite, press the X key to kick out, and hold the C key to jump. You can run by tapping the left or right arrow key twice, which helps increase the jump distance. Enemies receive more damage from bites, and chomping on them once they're lying on the ground restores health by a small margin. Evolution is also gained through eating, with eager chompers shifting from one growth phase to another quicker than a player who avoids confrontation with the archaeologists.

You can restart a level at any time by pressing the F2 function key. A short ending is shown after you've completed the game, but like most Commonplace Book competition entries (e.g. Verge) it hardly rewards the player with anything other than a congratulatory screen after all the key presses their fingers had to endure.

Freeware Game Pick: Verge (Kyle Pulver)

Verge is a 2D platformer created by the developer of Bonesaw: The Game for TIGSource's Commonplace Book competition, featuring music contributed by Alec Holowka. In it, players assume control over an unnamed protagonist who has to traverse between two worlds in order to solve rudimentary block puzzles and reach the exit of each stage. This will require impaling himself with spikes Karoshi-style, using marked tiles on the ground to teleport, or jumping into deep ponds to appear on the other side.

There are nine levels to play in this competition build, and will take about ten to twenty minutes to complete. (forum thread)
