Trailer: Rocky Memphis and the Temple of Ophuxoff (Ovine by Design and Smila)

The trailer above is for an upcoming game by master remaker Stuart Collier (with C64 graphics contributed by the talented Smila), which definitely falls into the category of 'love it or hate it' Rick Dangerous-style platformers. Personally I'm a big fan of them, and I already have Rocky Memphis and the Temple of Ophuxoff written down on my want list.

This upcoming release sports over 700 rooms to explore, and worry not if you get lost because there's a world map and teleporters that'll get you to places quickly in the game. No fixed date yet on when it'll be out, but judging by how much of the project is shown in the above video and how fast Stu and Smila works, the game could be in your hands sooner than you'd expect. Jesse Venbrux's New Experimental Game, Enlightenment

Enlightenment is a new experimental project created by the developer of the Karoshi series, where players who participate in it can leave a trail of words for subsequent visitors to follow or build on top of it. Each white orb that you collect increases your ability to write longer words, and when you submit words using the enter key a portal to another world will be generated automatically for you.

Besides finding thoughts that other explorers have left behind there's not much else to do in Enlightenment at the moment, but Jesse already has some ideas on how to expand on it further and will be replacing the slightly-altered Maru art with new graphics for future releases. [UPDATE: The latest version (0.4) is only available to download from YoYo Games, and features a story creation mode.]

Something silly but funny

12th of August 2010

Music: Osmos (Hemisphere Games)

With the release of Osmos last week for iPhone, musician Mat Jarvis reminds us that music tracks for the ambient puzzle title remain available for free streaming and download online. Earlier this year the website CreateDigitalMusic together with Hemisphere Games tied together eight background music tracks into a freely available, gapless audio odyssey, fifty minutes in length. The downloadable mp3 file includes music by Julien Neto, Loscil, Gas and High Skies.

The latter two artist names have been used by Jarvis at various times ("Discovery" is now fifteen years-old) as part of his online label Microscopics. "The Shape of Things to Come" was written as part of an experimental music album in which every piece of music was specified to be six minutes long, in the key of A Minor and with as few rhythmic elements as possible. This allowed individual pieces to be played on top of one another in an inexhaustible number of combinations.

The gapless audio track can be found on CreateDigitalMusic.

Freeware Game Pick: Not-So-Massive Action Game (Ade)

Not-So-Massive Action Game puts you in the heat of battle, ready to shoot down helicopters, pump enemies full of bullets and bomb exotic bases.

It's a relatively simple 2D shooter, but it's also a great deal of fun. There are eight challenges to play through which start off as simple 'survive for 3 minutes' ordeals, but soon become more interesting, with you swooping into enemy territory in a helicopter, planting bombs, then grappling your way back out. The whole thing can be played through with two players on the same keyboard too.

It's worth reading through the readme before you play, as some of the controls aren't obvious. Download from Gamejolt. (Source: Wow, You Lose)

Freeware Game Pick: Strap-on-bomb Car (Urre)

Strap-on-bomb Car is a single-button racing game that features only one track to play, created by Urre over the course of two months with the help of a modified Quake engine. Only the space key is used for switching between turning left or right, and if you hold down the button the car will speed forward in a straight line.

For some reason the game will try and access the internet and trigger your firewall alarm when you run the executable, so you might want to keep that in mind before downloading this piece of software. Thanks to parkbench from the selectbutton forums for the recommendation. (Mac/Win/Linux, 24.7MB)

Freeware Game Pick: Mega Thumb: Dream Match (Quazi)

Mega Thumb: Dream Match is possibly the first virtual thumb war game I have ever played, although I can't be certain of that. You take control of a thumb as it works its way up the ranks to become the thumb wrestling champion.

The game is available to play for one or two players, although the AI in single-player is really quite difficult to beat. The best tactic I found was to quickly put the thumb down, then straight back up again - the AI will go for the pin and miss, allowing you to pin them instead. It's then a case of hitting the shift button when the bar is full to secure the pin.

What's very cool is that you can go into Edit Mode and customize your thumb with different stickers and clothing, although if you want to try this out, make sure you download the game rather than quickplay it - the materials won't load otherwise. Give it a download from Gamejolt.

Freeware Game Pick: Momodora (Guilherme Martins)

Momodora is a 2D platformer that tells the story of an orphan girl named Isadora who went looking for a rare item in a secluded labyrinth. This network of caves harbour bug-eyed enemies of different shapes and sizes, but all of them bear the intention of hurting you in some way or the other. Fortunately you came prepared with a magic leaf that can be used to attack your adversaries, and throughout your quest more powerful weapons can be discovered and added to your bag of tricks.

Though the game looks and sounds great, it could have benefited from having more checkpoint locations to reduce the frustration of walking through the same rooms multiple times. To download Momodora, click here. (Windows, 7.18MB)

Virgin has been good enough to allow me to use my broadband service for the first time in four days.  How sweet of them!

Freeware Game Pick: Ikaros Tonight (Dot Zo Games)

Ikaros Tonight is a 2D platformer created by Dot Zo Games, developer of Journey to the Center of the Earth and the Xbox Live Indie Games release Ninja Bros. The objective of the game is to collect keys that'll unlock the exit door in each area, advancing from one stage to another until you've beaten every single level or run out of lives. Yellow orbs can be used to boost you upwards, and tapping the left or right cursor key rapidly while Icarus is still in the air causes him to float back down to the ground at a slower speed.

A large gem that rewards the player with an extra life will only appear after you've collected three small gems in a row, and a reset key (tab) is included for situations where you're stuck on a platform with no way to reach the exit. A password is provided to the player for every ten levels completed, and you can input this code to skip levels quickly or resume playing from a certain point the next time you run the game. Download Ikaros Tonight here. (Windows, 2.66MB)

Browser Game Pick: Dino Strike (Miniclip)

Dino Strike is a scrolling beat 'em up that comes with a single-player option only, even though the character selection menu presents two fighters for you to choose from. The game has four levels to play through in total, and a boss fight await those who make it to the end of each.

In addition to the standard punch and kicks, players can grab, throw, and even execute special moves that will knock any opponent off their feet. There are numerous type of items that you can acquire from crates or barrels, and any weapons collected can be used against your enemies as well.

The problem with Dino Strike is that the default difficulty setting is on easy mode, and players will quickly realize that the game presents absolutely no challenge whatsoever until they've spent some time completing all four stages to unlock the normal difficulty campaign.

Weekend Deals: Cogs, Gratuitous Space Battles, Machinarium and Immortal Defense

Here are a couple of weekend deals that we think should be brought to your attention before they expire next week. Cogs is currently on sale at Impulse for a discounted price of $6 (40% off the orignal price of $10). Gratuitous Space Battles is 75% off in Steam's Weekend Deal, bringing the price down from $20 to just $5. You can get all three expansion packs for the game (The Order, The Swarm and The Tribes) for an additional $1.25, or buy them separately at $1.50 each. Both Cogs and GSB discounts expire on Monday.

Amanita Design is running a Machinarium Amnesty sale that offers customers a copy of their game for all three operating systems (Windows, Mac and Linux) plus the soundtrack for only $5 (75% off the original price of $20). This promotion ends on August 12th.

Last but not least is Immortal Defense's Pay-What-You-Want sale, where you can snag a copy of the game at any price from $1.75 onwards (to cover processing and transaction fees charged by the service provider). No end date set for this offer, and there's a lengthy demo that you can try out before deciding on a purchase.

Trailer: Fuel Overdose (I-Friqiya)

Fuel Overdose is the first title from Dubai and Tokyo-based developer I-Friqiya. It's a racing game set in an apocalyptic world with some really loud heavy metal played over the top.

There's barely any details as of yet, but if there is online multiplayer and the handling is decent, this could turn out to be a lot of fun. It's looks pretty anyway, so that's a good sign. Read more over here.

Freeware Game Pick: By the Numbers (Aki Ahonen)

By the Numbers is a short adventure game created using the AGS engine, featuring full voice acting and characters rendered using a combination of motion-capture script and simple vector graphics. You play as lieutenant Timothy Orman, a cop who has to question an eyewitness to a kidnapping for clues that'll lead you to the criminal. Nearly the entire game is set inside the questioning room (a One Room One Week competition rule), excluding the short intermission sequence that splits the story into two acts.

The post-competition version includes an option to skip dialogues or cutscenes, while subtitles can also be toggled on and off by pressing the S key. The conversation between the two main characters can get a bit colourful at times, so you might want to consider lowering the volume of your speakers or putting on headphones before playing it if you have children in the house. (Windows, 18.0MB)

Trailer: Dustforce (Hitbox)

Not often do games about sweeping up dust and leaves land in my inbox, especially ones that look this damn good. Dustforce is an 'acrobatic platformer' and it's just shot up my 'I want this game now' list.

Players use their trusty broom to leap, sweep and leap again, pulling off some crazy moves along the way. The broom can be used to slide down walls and spring across tricky pits and obstacles. It's all incredibly stylish too, with lovely fluid animations and movement. The controls take a little getting used to, but eventually you'll be pulling off amazing maneuvers.

There's a demo available to download for anyone who wants to give it a go. The final version is set to include a level editor, more polish and lots more content.

Freeware Game Pick: Tricky Truck (Peter Sotesz)

Tricky Truck is a new physics-based simulation game created by the developer of Sumotori Dreams, where the objective is to maneuver your vehicle around bends or walls before parking it safely at the designated spot. The camera control is on manual operation by default, and you have to avoid crashing into any PCB boards while driving on the road.

Some of its other features include a replay mode, checkpoint system, and a fixed camera angle that can be toggled on and off. A hard difficulty setting is available for all eight levels, in which players have to operate the truck using a limited view from the driver's seat.

Tricky Truck is just one of the nineteen games submitted to this year's Assembly game development competition, and download links for all entries are available at the official site. (source: Rock, Paper, Shotgun)
