Dr Zhivago

Dr Zhivago is a story of love in the middle of the Russian revolution.  It shows us how anyone morals can be questioned at anytime.

Docter Zhivago is an adaptation of a Boris Pasternak novel.  I have a first run production of the book by Fontana Monarchy.

The beginning of the film sees the Yuri’s brother Yevgraf Zhivago, played by Alex Guiness, talking to a young women.  He tells her that she’s the daughter of Yuri Zhavago.  He starts to tell her how her mother met Yuri and that’s when the films flash back starts.

Yuri returns from Europe to his family and childhood sweet heart (Tonya).  Whilst in Europe Yuri has been learning to be a doctor.  Tonya and Yuri spend a lot of time together and eventually get married.

One day at a party that his Senior doctor is attacked and almost killed by a woman called Lara.  Dr Zhivago stops this woman doing something stupid.  It turns out that she was having an affair with the senior doctor and wanted revenge for just being chucked out like yesterdays paper.  Doctor Zhivago goes with her to see her ill mother a few times and then that’s the last we see of her for a while.

The revolution starts and Lara marries a man called Pasha who is a staunch supporter of the revolution and is an enemy of the state that at the time was ruled with an iron fist.  Pasha gets hurt in a march and hides in Laras house.  He uses iodine to stop the cut getting infected and it leave the scare on the man in the background of this review.

The revolution is successful in the local area that Yuri and Tonya live and they are made to share their house with many people.  There is a point in the film when Yuri leaves the room the family now reside in and returns to find that the fire has been turned off.  He finds out that things are a lot worse than he thought.  He goes out to steel some wood and on his return, he comes into contact with Yevgraf for the first time; not knowing the fact that he is his brother.

After that the family leave the city they live in and go to live in the countryside.  They seem happy but later on Yuri who gets lost id recruited into the local resistance army and a long while after that happens he get left behind in a raid. (Lara eventually leave Pasha and that is when she goes and lives in this house that Yuri finds her in). As Yuri is walking; he spots a house and Lara is the owner of the house.  They become lovers and live together.  Yuri eventually remembers that he’s married and goes back to the old house to find that it is empty as he left it.  All that is left is memories of a time that has past.

Yuri meets up with Tonya who meets Lara and tell him that her children and herself were going to live in Europe.

I’m not quite sure what happens next but they show Yuri old and frail.  He sees Lara for the final time and tries to chase after her and dies.
