Zardos

I have always liked this film and in fact consider it one of the best films ever made; why?

The film was directed by John Borman and is a reflection of the hippy age that the film was made in.

It has some well known and not so well known actors like:

Shaun Connery, Charlotte Rampling, John Alderton and many more.

The story revolves mainly around and executioner and his voyage into a village that up to that point, wasn’t open to the public.

The first lines of the film has a man called Arthur Frane and he says.  “I am Arthur fane and I long to die.”  This should give you an insight to the movie.

The films is about a made up god called Zardos and the person who created.  It turns out that many years ago; a group of the greatest minds at that time were given immortality but had to isolate themselves from the rest of society.  To stave off boredom, they decided to invent ways to reduce the boredom of menial work.  This required getting the outsiders to do the work for them.  One of them thought up the idea of a god and used a stone head to represent the god.

Taking into account the fact that the outsiders were in fact stupid, used a famous book to gain inspiration for the name.  It later turns out that he was also manipulating the DNA of the executioners who were men bread to do the work of Zardos, to remove the outsiders ability to reproduce; I.E. have babies.

All was working out well for them until they had to change the orders from the stone head to the executioners and they started to question why they were growing food that they never ate.  This lead them to smuggle the Executioner (who is played by Shaun Connery) into the stone head to find out exactly where this head went and who god might be.

We latter find out that Zardos is in fact ******; I’m not going to spoil the movie for you and what Zardos purpose in letting the executioner into the stone head.

I did find this film slightly confusing but enjoyable at the same time.  I have seen this film about twenty times or more and the fact that I own the film on VHS, Laserdisc and DVD should give you an idea of the level of interest I have in this film.
