Surfs UP

This film really has nothing to do with penguins.  The penguins really are a gimmick to get you to watch the film.  I mean; SURFING PENGUINS DUDE!

This film basically tries to explain why some individuals like to surf, do extreme sports, etc.  The fact that not everything we do has to have a dollar sign.  It is a bit like looking into a mirror and seeing our own soul.  Some people are soulless and only see what they can get.  They only do something for the fame but others just enjoy the thrill.  The fact that just being good at something is enough.

Comedians are considered sell outs if they do commercials.  Perhaps there is a little penguin in all of us trying to escape these bonds of society and just surf dude.

Warning!  If you have not seen the film; skip the next section.

The film.  I almost forgot this was a review.  It centres around a little penguin who was visited when he was small by Z.  The greatest surfer of all time and from that day onwards, decided to be the best he could.  Z said to him to never give up hope.    His name is Cody.  A talent spotter (some bird) comes to his island and he tries to get picked.  As with all children’s movies, it doesn’t work as well as he hoped but, he doesn’t give up and after chasing them gets pulled on board.

He gets to the island and a big penguin called tank is throwing stones at a memorial To Z.  This upsets Cody and he challenges tank.  This weird possum looking creature decides that they should have a surfing contest.  Cody looses big time.  I hate to point out the obvious but, this film is predictable.  That’s why it works as a children’s film.  You know what to expect.

Cody almost dies and this girl penguin called Lani drags him to a cave where a fat penguin is sleeping.  (I forgot to mention that Z died 10 years ago and every year, they hold the Z memorial contest.)  So the big fat dude wakes up and eventually revives Cody.  They become good buddies.

I won’t finish the plot.  It is predictable but very enjoyable.  Not every film has to question the meaning of life.  Sometimes it’s nice just to watch a film that isn’t pretentious.

I does what it says on the tin.  Surfing penguins are fun to watch and it could be any teenager type movie.  It’s done in a documentary style and it works.  The main guy is just like almost everyone that we meat on a day to day basis; ordinary but hopes to one day do some special and gives us hope and this is in the same vein as the Pixar movies.  Take your children; they will enjoy this film and you might find yourself secretly enjoying it as well.
