I remember watching this
film in cinema when I was just a young boy.
It was the first time I had ever seen a film with Christopher Reeves
in and was thought quite enjoyable. It
includes some famous actors; especially Marlon Brando.
The Plot.
At the beginning of the
movie we learn about superman’s planet of birth is about to be destroyed and
his father Durrel launches his son Callel or something like that into
space. The hope is to send him to a
planet that he can live on and that planet turns out to be Earth.
When his space ship lands;
a elderly couple sees the crash and goes to see what just happened and spots
a little boy. They take the boy back
to the car and at some point the cars suffers a puncture. The old man gets out the car and starts to
replace the flat tyre but the cars falls off the jack but before it can cause
any damage; the boy lifts the car up (I must point out that I haven’t seen
this film for a while and my memory is hazy).
Latter on I think the old
man dies and leaves his wife and adopted son to fend for themselves.
The films moves forward a
few years and we next see superman who takes on the persona of Clarke Kent
and he’s trying to get a job at a newspaper called the Daily Bugle. This is where we first meet the feisty women
called Louis Lane ace
reporter and sometimes, trouble maker (well; she certainly is the cause of
some of superman’s rescues).
We learn of the super
genius called Lex Luther (well he thinks he is but for a genius is rather
stupid in my opinion) who decides that he wants to change the western coast
of the US. He starts buying ridiculous stretches of
land and this is when the Daily Bugle sends Louis and Clarke to find out why.
It turns out that Lex has
decided to remove the eastern coast of America
and then sell off the land that he owns at very high prices. The problem with that idea would be that
the government would just take it back and use it to re-house the homeless but, for this film to work we
have to ignore that and imagine the government wouldn’t. So how do you remove a massive piece of
land like this? Simple; we’ll steal a
nuclear bomb and detonate it on the San Andreas fault,
causing the entire area to drop into the magma beneath it.
Of course superman has to
save the day and all is well.
It must be said that this
is really a film for the comic book fan.
I didn’t really like it that much when I first saw this movie but,
found that over the years was more enjoyable each time I watched it.
