Miami Vice the Movie

I was always a fan of the original series of Miami Vice.  It mainly followed the two policemen: James “Sonny” Crocket and Ricardo Tubbs.  So, I was looking forward to the movie.  I didn’t expect it to be anything but Miami Vice and I have to say that it is one cool film.

Direct by Michael Mann; you are not disappointed with the result.  A lot of reviewers were complaining that the plot was so eighties and the movie hasn’t moved on much since the TV series finished in the early nineties.  The trouble with taking an iconic show like Miami Vice and making a film about it, is that your damned if you do and damned if you don’t.

It is true that they could have changed the plot to such an extent that no one who watched the original series would

have recognised it and then they would have complained even more than the few who did complain.  Well; I can report to you that they have found a medium that should keep everyone happy.  I was happy and enjoyed every single minute of the two hour movie.

In the movie you learn from on of the police departments that someone is a mole in your organisation and it’s up to Crocket and Tubbs to find out who the person is.  You go the Cuba, Haiti and a few other places.  The sets are top notch and really feel like Michael Mann is happiest when he’s filming on locations that are exotic.

The first thing they do is to stop who ever it is that drug running for the cliché drug baron and take their places.

The two cops then offer their services to the drug lord and he accepts their services.  Crocket get involved with the drug lord’s major squeeze and that always turns out bad in the end.  I will leave it there, as you will enjoy watching this film.

All I will say is that if you have seen the TV series, you’ve already seen the film and will be happy with the results.  Personally I would have preferred if Michael Mann went with Don Johnson and Phillip Michael Thomas.  This meant to be an update of the original idea and they could have at least gave them cameos in senior positions.  They could have given the idea that these two were the next generation of Miami Vice.  Slight niggles to one side, this film is great; so far this year, this is probably been the most enjoyable film that I have watched and I only recently watch the original election.  That is a Hong Kong movie and that was brilliant as well.
