Hellboy 2: The Golden Army

So hell boy is back and has a girlfriend this time.  The film starts when hellboy was just a youth and his step father tells him a bed time story.  The story talks about a battle between the humans and the elves and how the humans were whooping the elves butts.  So the king of the elves commissioned and army of mechanical creatures of 70 x 70 soldiers to fight for them and almost destroys the human race.  Seeing what the elf king had unleashed, he felt sad at what had happened to the humans and came to an agreement with the humans.  They would stay in the cities and the elves would occupy the forest and never the twain shall meet.

The problem was that the Elven king's son did not agree and sent himself into exile until the elves needed him to fight for them and then he would return to retake their rightful place as rulers of the world.  Why am I thinking of Lord of the rings for some reason.

Hellboy's a reckless as usual and seems to have domestic problems this time, which is funny and I guess cute. This person seems to be modelled on Firestar from Spiderman and his amazing friends if you ask me.  She has a temper and I for one would not want to get in her way. The elven princess is the twin of the twat at the end and for some reason her link to him goes further than knowing each other thoughts.  If he gets hurt, so does she and visa versa. The fish dude that was in the first movie and makes his return.  Prince what's his name here, decides to resurrect the golden army but needs the three parts of the kings crown to control them.

So the prince comes back and kills his father; there's something almost Freudian about that and goes to take what he thinks is his.  So you have the usual battle of good vs bad but the good comes from hell; you can't get more ironic than that I guess.

One thing I like about the main character is the fact that he is a regular guy.  He doesn't have some mental instabilities, he doesn't want to get revenge for what, who ever did to him, He doesn't have a grandiose scheme to take over the world.  He's just someone trying to get by in the world and just happens to be very powerful.  He didn't see his parents killed in front of him and I for one think that's great.  Why oh why should every super hero/villain have to be complicated?  I remember the days when someone could just be an arsehole and that was the only reason he/she decided to be evil.

This movies has some amazing backdrops and reminds me a lot of Dark City mixed with Lord of the rings and that's not a bad thing.  What Guillermo del Toro does well is the sets and you will marvel at the colour and detail that goes into this movie.  For some reason, every time I looked at the elven prince, I kept thinking of Tom Cruise.  He looked a lot like him.  Also, when the prince and the princess were close together, I was wondering if the twin had some kind of yin and yang thing going on there.  Her lips were red and his was black.

If you like silly movies that are just fun to watch and nothing more, give this a try.  Just don't expect it to be Pans Labyrinth.
